Our plan for the 27th is to talk about Risk. How do you feel about taking risks—whether it’s skydiving, doing civil disobedience, being honest with a loved one, or trying something new that you might not be good at? Some aging experts say that older adults are better at taking risks—for example, some who thought they could never be artists are willing to try painting or singing because they are less likely to fear criticism or failure. At the same time, older people are often urged to avoid risk and to be cautious in their daily habits—to not risk falling, say, or to avoid favorite foods in order to protect their health. Are you a risk taker or risk averse? Has that quality changed as you’ve gotten older? What risks have you taken that you found rewarding?
