WES Blog — Sunday Ethical Education for Kids

The year is rolling along and I thought it was time to share what our youth and teens are working on this year at WES. Some of it may seem obvious, like you can see the the children running down to class or sharing what they did during platform service, but there is so much more.
Yes, we offer a Sunday School program at WES on Sunday mornings that is open to all children and youth. Here is a rundown of our classes this year:
At the 9:30 Platform Service we are offering these classes:
  • Nursery – birth to about age three
  • Preschool – three to five years old – curriculum centering around Ethical Culture Core Values
  • Kindergarten-1st Grades – Our Whole Lives (OWL), a human sexuality education course for young children
  • Theme Explorations (students can choose from several stations to learn more about the monthly themes)
At the 11:30 Platform we offer these classes:
  • Nursery – birth to about age three
  • Preschool – three to five years old – curriculum centering around Ethical Culture Core Values
  • Theme Explorations (students can choose from several stations to learn more about the monthly themes)
  • Harry Potter Social Action Curriculum. (A curriculum that includes many fun wizarding activities, but the main purpose of the curriculum is social action.)
  • 7th-9th Grades OWL (a human sexuality education course).
  • Teen Group
These classes are just part of how our youth and teens are involved at WES. Our children and youth are actively involved in many areas. They are singing in chorus and playing in our music jam sessions. This past week was the youth chorus’ first performance and they sounded fabulous!
Teen Lila Chafe, is out artist of the year for WES and she is working with our youth to produce photographic art. Watching this unfold is wonderful. Lila not only is taking photos but also teaching interested children to shoot their own photos for the project too.
Teens are part of our sound and lights teams for Winter Festival. They work in the nursery and assist with other childcare needs throughout the year. Teens are serving for the WES auction and one teen is cooking. There are children who help with ushering and who assist the Green team, and teens and youth help with the cooking and serving the Stone Soup Festival, and Shmoozapalooza.
Youth are an integral part of the WES family and love it when I witness these multigenerational interactions that I see every week. Does your child want to get more involved? Contact Melissa Sinclair to learn more.
Warmly,
Melissa Sinclair
