The Washington Ethical Society stands in support of all transgender people. We affirm
the right of people under the trans umbrella to live in alignment with their true selves
and to be treated equitably and kindly. Further, we decry any and all assaults on trans
people or their rights, dignity, and worth.

Within the WES community, this includes our commitment to honoring members’ and
visitors’ chosen names and pronouns, choices of gender expression, and right to use
the bathroom they feel most comfortable using.

As a congregation, we also commit to ongoing listening to those harmed; learning about
our roles in perpetuating systems that enable and/or allow harm to occur and how we
can change those systems, and advocate to increase gender diversity.

We call on our elected officials – at the local, state, and federal levels – to stand up for
the rights of their transgender constituents, in the areas of medical care, public service,
participation in sports, safe and equitable access to public accommodations, as well as
all other rights and privileges that cisgender people enjoy. Most importantly, we seek to
end oppression and we affirm the right of trans people to thrive and live their lives in
peace.
