LIGHTS FOR LIBERTY RALLY: WES Immigration Support Team

July 12:  Over 20 WES members joined 1,500 concerned citizens at Lafayette Square at the “Lights For Liberty” rally to protect migrant refugees along the southern U.S. border.  We heard a number of powerful speakers, including CASA founder, Gustavo Torres; Randi Weingarten, head of the American Federation of Teachers; and Revs. Sharon Stanley and Abhi Janamanchi of the Congregation Action Network (WES is a member).  All of the speakers focused on the deplorable conditions that refugees are facing, particularly the separation of children from their families. In addition, long-time WES members Lynne and Todd Waymon helped organize a rally at Pennswood Village, their Quaker retirement community in Pennsylvania in which 60 people participated. Thanks to everyone from WES who attended the rallies.

These words from fellow attendee Mark Greiner capture the moment:

“Please take care of your family, friends and neighbors as the (ICE) crackdown begins… Donate to your local organizations committed to promoting the rights of individuals and families involved in the immigration and asylum process.  If you are part of a congregation, join the Congregation Action Network. Together, ‘we shall overcome.’”
