Unshackling History: A Family’s Journey of the Underground Railroad

Join historian Anthony Cohen as he recounts his work exploring the American slavery experience, from his 1996 retracing of the Underground Railroad by foot, to being secretly shipped inside of a wooden crate like Virginia fugitive Henry “Box” Brown.

Cohen will reveal his thirty year journey to untangle his family roots, including reconstructing the life story of his great uncle Patrick Sneed—an enslaved man of African, Jewish, Irish and Cherokee heritage—who fled from bondage in 1849 and later went on to fight in the Civil War.
