Time to Reclaim Our Vote!

Did you know that members of WES have been hard at work on a postcard campaign, helping disenfranchised voters get registered to vote for the November election? With support from the AEU, UUSJ, the Reeb Project, and Reclaim Our Vote/NAACP, we sent out 1,500 postcards to voters in North Carolina and Texas this summer.

We are now going to write postcards to voters in Georgia, in particular Gwinnett County, which the Atlanta Journal-Constitution described as “ground zero in the fight over voter suppression” (https://www.ajc.com/news/local-govt–politics/just-group-sues-kemp-gwinnett-elections-board-over-ballot-rejections/1qMxof9sA0um6w32vmrG2I/). Our cluster of congregations in the DMV has a goal of sending 25,000 postcards to Georgia voters, and they need to be put in the mail by September 20!

Here’s where we need your help – we need more volunteers to meet this goal. Many WES members already wrote lots postcards this summer: Perry Beider, Josh Blinder, Shelagh Bocoum, Trang Duong, Sonja Kueppers, Emily Newman, Karen Schofield-Leca, Lauren Strange, Donna Taylor, and Hugh Taft-Morales. Thank you, all, and a special thanks to Hugh for getting this project started!

A couple of our previous volunteers have expressed an interest in doing more postcards: Laura Bradshaw, Christine Parcelli, and Shan Evans, our connection to additional volunteers through Silver Spring Village. And we have already heard from some new volunteers: Abi Daken, Richard Reis, Laura Steele, and our Interim Leader Lyn Cox.

How about you? If you can provide some colored pens and your time, committing to getting your postcards in the mail by September 20, we will provide the instructions, mailing addresses, postcards, and stamps. Please email Kate Lang (klang20910@yahoo.com) to let us know how many postcards you or your household will write in increments of 30.
