WES Blog – “Raising Human(ist)s”

As some of you know, over the years I have had the fun of working on projects that I’d call “WES-adjacent”…linked to my work at WES and to WES’ mission, but not really *of* WES, often reaching out to a broader community. A few years ago that project was the Humanist Clergy Collaboratory, which brought together humanists from UUism, Ethical Culture, and humanistic Judaism. This year, it’s a podcast!

That’s right…everyone and their brother has a podcast now, and I will shortly be joining them. “Raising Human(ist)s” is for anyone who is raising, or helping to raise, humans…and in particular those that are doing so with humanist values. The first few episodes will feature some aWESome WES members, talking about their areas of parenting expertise (or parenting experimentation!). If you are interested in a particular topic, whether to be on the podcast or just because you want me to explore it, please let me know!

That said, my real hope is that this podcast will reach not just WES folks–who already have each other to rely on for parenting conversations–but also, and especially, families that are raising kids with humanist values in areas without Ethical Societies or other humanist-friendly communities. I know a lot of parents are out there, trying to figure out what to say to their kids about death, or religion, or ritual…and knowing that their own parents’ answers don’t fit for them. If this podcast can be a conversation partner in their parenting, I’ll be happy!

Please join me this Sunday afternoon, March 1, at 1pm to “launch” the podcast (and subscribe to it), and please consider sharing it with your friends and family. I’d love to hear your ideas! Bring a potluck dish for a shared lunch, and some board games for family board game time that afternoon.

And BIG thanks to the American Ethical Union for providing funding for the equipment and editing that made this possible!

Warmly,

Amanda
