WES Blog – Mii waayrii maa!

A blog from Membership Coordinator Maceo Thomas.

Mii waayrii maa!

“Wow!!  I haven’t seen you in a month of Sundays!!” .  I learned this expression growing up and it regularly followed with smiles and outstretched arms.

Dictionary.com gives this explanation:

“month of Sundays” – A long time, as in I haven’t seen Barbara in a month of Sundays. This expression, which would literally mean thirty weeks, has been used hyperbolically since it was first recorded in 1832. One writer suggests it originally connoted a long dreary time, since games and other kinds of amusement used to be forbidden on Sunday.

A verb in pulaar used similarly is waayr_de.  The actual translation is “to go a long time without.”

“Mii waayrii maa yiidee!”/ (I haven’t seen you in a long time).  Often followed with smiles and outstretched arms.

These both are really terms of endearment to tell someone how much you miss them.

As of today, we have passed ten Sundays since we’ve last seen each other face-to-face as a community.  It’s been a long time. As we follow the updates from health officials and learn more and more, it’s clear for many of us it may be a month of Sundays before we all come together again.

The WES community has come together in new ways to be connected and “see” each other.  I had a conversation with a long time member who tells me how she lives for her Saturday morning buddy zoom call with another member.  She tells me they have known each other for decades and now have this unique opportunity to connect more deeply during this opportunity that These Times have offered us.

The Sci-Fi Book Club is on their third book since we last all saw each other.  On May 24th they will be discussing All Systems Red at 1pm.  Contact Adam Limehouse to get on their mailing list.  That same Sunday is full of other groups meeting; including the Philosophy group and a brand new caregivers group. All of the links to the groups can be found on the WES calendar.

Our month of Sundays still has much more time to pass. We can find new ways to see each other.  If you are looking to “see” more of WES, whether it’s a one-on-one call with another member, or participating in group meetings;  and you need a nudge to help get more connected please contact me at maceot@ethicalsociety.org.

Mii waayrii maa yiidee!
