Sing, sing a song, sing out loud, sing out strong… Some of you will recognize the lyrics of Sing, by Joe Raposo from the early years of Sesame Street. Now, I disagree with singing only about happy things, not sad, but I do love a key part of the message: let’s all sing, together, without worrying so much about how it sounds, and more about how it feels.
Every platform, we sing together. Some of your kids would like to sing more, so here’s an opportunity! WES Youth Voices Chorus begins with an orientation on Wednesday, September 26, for parents/guardians and their children ages 8-18 from 6:30-7 pm in the Main Hall. Weekly rehearsals begin Oct. 10, and continue through Dec. 5 before taking a break for the winter holidays. Of course, I don’t expect that everyone will be able to attend every rehearsal (and we will all skip Wednesday, Nov. 21) but I suspect that once our youth get singing, they’ll want to make Youth Chorus a part of their weekly rhythm (see what I did there?!)
Now, before you start to wonder what your kids will do during platform, I’ll tell you: they’ll attend their SEEK classes or sit with you just as they always do, no changes necessary. The music we work on will include past and upcoming closing songs for our themes, as well as new pieces for the Youth Chorus to present in platform October 28, Nov. 18, and Dec. 9.
If you have more questions, please send me an email or just plan to attend the September 26 orientation. Here’s to making more music together!
